how to enable sticky keys in xorg?

2011-02-24 Thread Neil Short
can sticky keys (SHIFT. ALT and CTRL hold until the next key is pressed) be
enabled in x11-input.fdi? I wish to enable this accessibility option without
resorting to KDE or GNOME.

Re: FreeBSD vs YouTube

Another alternative is to install the firefox plugin called DownloadHelper. It
works very well with youtube and several other sites.
start here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/

and click the link for Popular. It's near the top of the list.

terrible mplayer performance

2010-06-14 Thread Neil Short
Ok. I'm stuck. Mplayer's performance is worse on this laptop than it is on my
Toshiba running with a half-speed processor. I have attempted all the
suggestions I can find re: getting the performance.
The video is slow - so it lags the audio by quite a bit. I keep getting Your
processor is too slow... stuff.

What to do?

I built mplayer from ports (not package).
mplayer-1.0.r20100117_1

My computer is an HP Pavilion dv4

xorg.conf is set up to run the vesa driver. That's how X -configure set it up.
I have no idea what graphics device is actually on this machine.

wdm doesn't start windowing manager.

2010-04-09 Thread Neil Short
Has anybody had this problem and fixed it?
wdm runs my ~/.xsession file; but no X-applications run. It just runs past them
and returns to the wdm login screen.

Currently I am running xdm; but it's kind of bland and spicing it up requires a
very steep learning curve.

HP DV4-2153 laptop

2010-02-18 Thread Neil Short
problem: 7.2-Release doesn't detect either network device.

Just picked up a HP DV4-2153 laptop from Costco. I don't know how new it is;
but it may be fairly new. In the store I was able to determine the wireless
device to be Atheros. I don't know what the wired device is. I never booted
WinD'OH!s on the machine. I just loaded it up with FreeBSD 7.2-R.

Anyway:
1) Has anybody had success with this particular laptop?
2) Are there any tricks for determining the network devices? I tried
kldload-ing every network device and had no luck.

 use the
the --batch switch or put BATCH=yes in make.conf IIRC.

That particular make.conf is in /etc

But IMHO, remembering to always give portupgrade the -C

 way to go.

need a Mencoder expert

2010-01-16 Thread Neil Short
I have a VOB file that I need to convert to something playable on a Sony
Walkman NWZ-E344.

The walkman wants an ASF container, resolution of 320x240 (or less), wmv9
codec, wma 2 codec, 30 frames per second, video bitrate of less than or equal

I cannot seem to get a mencoder (nor ffmpeg) encoding line to work.

mplayer / bash question

2009-12-29 Thread Neil Short
I'm trying to batch-rip audio files from a bunch of video files.

I have a directory full of *.vob files:

 ls *.vob
01.vob 03.vob 05.vob 07.vob 09.vob 11.vob 13.vob
02.vob 04.vob 06.vob 08.vob 10.vob 12.vob

So I wrote a little command line script to rip wave files from all the vob's:

  ls *.vob |
 while read f
 do
 mplayer -ao pcm:file=`basename $f .vob`.wav $f
 done

the first 01.wav file is created successfully; but then the whole sh'bang exits
without ripping the rest of the vob's:

Exiting... (End of file)

Uses the shell's native file globbing to expand the *.vob

 debugging on, and
see what your variables are expanding to as the script

wdm and xdm problems - related to HAL?

2009-11-10 Thread Neil Short
So I got Xorg working with Hal. Wahoo.
If I log in from a display manager I encounter some weird stuff.

If I am using xdm and I log out of the window manager and then attempt to shut
down the computer - by going to tty 0 and typing # halt -p - the disk syncs and
then the shutdown freezes.

If I am using wdm and I log out of the window manager and want to log back in,
it takes my username but does not clear the text field for me to type a
password.

There is only one regular user on the system.

I was starting to suspect as much after having found the related man pages. Do
you know if sched_4bsd is required for the port win4bsd? It's definitely
required for the port install; but I wonder if I can change it back afterwards.

That's it!
I have an ATI Radion on this box. The screen res is 1280x800 which is not

Also, for the record, this fix also fixed my linux-firefox/linux-flashplugin

I had this problem with an old Sony Vaio about a year ago.
Xorg detected that the correct video driver to use was
 neomagic.
Whatever automatic configuration method I was using at the
 time decided
that I should be running with 32-bit color depth in
 xorg.conf.
It turns out that the neomagic driver doesn't support
 color depth greater
 than 24-bits...

This misconfiguration worked well enough until something
 like aterm tried
to use transparency, then it would complain about the
 BadMatch,
referring to the color depth that the driver supported
 versus the color
depth that X was configured for, presumably.

I found two solutions. One was to edit the
 Screen section of xorg.conf
to remove the entry with DefaultDepth 32. The other was to
 edit xorg.conf
to use the vesa driver instead of the neomagic driver.

xorg update (not) - configuration for ports

several of my computers run just fine on the old xorg.
Is there some configuration tool I can put into some
makefile somewhere that will tell the ports to use the
un-updated version of xorg - so the ports won't try to
update stuff in the xorg libraries?

I updated xorg on one computer that needed it and I
was shocked that every single application needed to be
recompiled - including the big woppers like open
office. I don't want to go through that again if I
don't have to.

This is even more true for me since I use the Dvorak

Maybe the vim port in the ports collection will bring

umass mount woes

2006-12-03 Thread Neil Short
I got a new whiz-bang mp3 play from SanDisk. I went
with SanDisk because they have always worked so well
with non-windows for me.

Anyway, I'm having a bit of a problem mounting it.
Other umass devices work fine on my system. Any help
will be appreciated. The device is a Sansa c240. as a
usb device, it doesn't default to umass behavior; but
it can be set to behave that way. I have set the
device USB mode to MSC mode.

Some sample system behavior:

Where is the default config now? it's been years

While I'm at it, how do I set the mouse speed?

 Thanks, Erik

 Ph: +34.666334818 web:

according to man xorg.conf:
Xorg uses a configuration file called xorg.conf
for its initial setup.
This configuration file is searched for in
the following places when
the server is started as a normal user:

   /etc/X11/cmdline
   /usr/X11R6/etc/X11/cmdline
   /etc/X11/$XORGCONFIG
   /usr/X11R6/etc/X11/$XORGCONFIG

   /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xorg.conf-4
   /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xorg.conf

I always just stick it in /etc/ .

Anyway, I don't remember where I finally found this
answer since it isn't mentioned in man xorg.conf: so
here, for a model, is the pertenant section of my
xorg.conf you can use as a model:

Section InputDevice
Identifier Keyboard0
Option XkbLayout dvorak
Driver kbd
EndSection

I hope this helps.

Now, interestingly, if I unplug the CDRW that uses IDE
1 slave, everything works fine.

But for my needs, I need three CDRWs.

Questions:

I have noticed a lot of Internet chatter about this
kind of thing happening with similar configurations on
WinXP. Using the generic XP IDE driver seems to fix
it.

Could this be a problem with FreeBSD?

Do you think it would be a dumb idea to try to run
either the hard drive or one of the CDRWs from one of
the available SATAs?

followup:
force reinstall/reregister of /usr/ports/lang/ruby18
did the trick.
