I'm looking to build a 'tapeless' backup system using a FreeBSD backup
staging server running both fixed and portable hard drives. The portable
drive I fancy is the LaCie 'Pocket Drive' with both USB2 and Firewire

I would certainly be checking the positions on the ribbon. I was caught
by this myself - should have known better, doh! For ATA-100+ cables, the
black connector is master and the grey is slave. Not an issue for older
and slower ATA modes, but a gotcha for ATA-100+.
