I am not sure if this might help, but it does improve the way fonts are
rendered for me in KDE and Gnome.
Basically it turns on hinting.
Put this in a file called .fonts.conf in your home directory.

From looking at the logs, it looks like these processes are trying
to access the ldap server which isnt up since it has not started yet.
Is there any way I can get past this (other than using the original
nsswitch.conf and changing back manually)?

You can go to single user mode (4) from the boot menu and then mount -
o rw / . Then you can edit /etc/fstab.
