That age old question again

2008-03-16 Thread Robert Chalmers
Not quite but close.
On the front page of FreeBSD.org, is the download links for
LATEST RELEASES
  a.. Production Release 7.0
Which I'm assuming is the latest, and commercially useable version.

Now I still find the situation of CURRENT, STABLE as they relate to RELEASE
slightly confusing, and no amount of description seems to clear it up.

Ok, I understand CURRENT is developmental, and becomes the next major
version as stated below. So the next major version is the one on the
website? Release 7.0 - or, 7.0-RELEASE ...yes/no?

Then 7.0-STABLE continues the work to be the bugfix/security blah blah tree.

The question I have is: For the Production Release shown above -
7.0-RELEASE, what is the cvsup tag to keep this version updated ??

.
-CURRENT is the development tree that will eventually become the next major
version of FreeBSD. The developers try to keep this tree buildable, but they
can't guarantee that it will be usable. Tread lightly all those that dare
run this version. You must know what you are doing, understand how to debug
and rebuild, and be prepared for lost data. As I write, this is known as
7-CURRENT, which will one day become FreeBSD 7.0. The cvsup tag for CURRENT
is . (the period).

Has anyone got the remote X-Win32 running?

2008-03-16 Thread Robert Chalmers
I've read the spots off everything I can find about getting X going, and I
have it all up and running sort of.

But only sort of.

I have X-Win32 trialling on a laptop, and want to be able to connect to the
Xserver - but I just can't seem to do it.

To give you a run down.

I have X working.

I have KDE working.

I have the /etc/ttys entry set to:

ttyv8 /usr/local/bin/xdm -nodaemon xterm on secure

.. (I note that kdm is much prettier, and appears to work Just as well)

I have the entry in xdm-config commented out.

! DisplayManager.requestPort: 0

/root/.xinitrc contains exec startkde

Ok.

Using 'xdm' , booting brings up an oversize font LOGIN -PASSWORD display.
Very ugly. (kdm looks nicer, but I'm following the manual)

Neither xdm or kdm, let me log in as root.

I have to go Ctl+alt+F1 to get to the good old terminal window.

Now, the main problem is .. Which is a real pain, as I do need to connect to
this thing remotely.

I can't connect from the remote laptop's X-Win32 program xterm emulator
program.

Has anyone managed to get any remote, xterm emulators going? And how so?

Thanks if you can help - I'm almost there.

Rob

A couple of questions about 7.0-RELEASE and X11

2008-03-15 Thread Robert Chalmers
I have just installed the new 7.0-RELEASE shown on the www.freebsd.org home
page ( still confused as to whether this is CURRENT or STABLE ) and trying
to get X working.

It doesn't appear to have xorgcfg in it anywhere? Has this handy program
been abandoned?

I'm running it on an old SAMTRON 5Ei monitor of unknown HorizontalSync and
VerticalSync patterns, and the card type is reported as S3.

There are a couple of ways to configure the xorg.conf file available - but
none seem to be producing any useable results.

The handbook is clear and concise - but none of it works.

I did a clean install of 7.0 and put X on at the time. But even the manual
talks about xorgcfg - but its no where to be found? Should it be there? Or
has it been discontinued?

thanks

Problems printing to remote print server. (Not PC/Nix)

2003-07-22 Thread Robert Chalmers
The thing I have on the network isa Print Server. A DLink three port
print server. Its not a FreeBSD box sharing print jobs, nor a W2K
machine doing the same. Its on a network connection of its own, and the
printers are plugged into it.

oh well. I'll keep digging. :-)

Printing to PrintServer problems

2003-07-21 Thread Robert Chalmers
I can't get FreeBSD to print to the the network PrintServer
W2K machines do fine. FreeBSD sends the jobs, but they just ... disappear ?
Printing to a W2K machine with a printer on its LP1 port work fine,
under printcap control, but not to the PrintServer?

any ideas anyone ?

Anyone printing to a DP-303 Print Server

2003-07-18 Thread Robert Chalmers
I have a DLilnk, DP-303 , 3 port print server on the network that the
W2K box mostly prints to. Three different printers depending on whats
required.
It would be nice if I could get the FreeBSD box to print to it as well,
but even the docs don't seem to cover this particular option, and also,
I believe it runs LAN Manager/IPX as well. Not sure about tcp/ip, I'll
have to look into that. I dont want to have to run SAMBA just to do it
if possible. I'll just hangn old printer of the FreeBSD box

thanks
Robert

2003-07-18 Thread Robert Chalmers
Is there a FreeBSD based app that I can use to bulk copy about 800 .rm
files from one site to another? I really don't want to have to do it one
at a time. ftp isn't available. The only access I have is via the web
port. bummmer but theres no choice

Mozilla 1.4 problems. Help needed. No running window found.

2003-07-17 Thread Robert Chalmers
Mozilla compiles fine it seems, but when I go to run it, I get this, and
it dies.

$mozilla
No running window found.
Xlib: extension RENDER missing on display 203.1.96.3:0.0.
/usr/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: /usr/X11R6/lib/libXft.so.2: Undefined symbol
XRenderQuerySubpixelOrder

Could someone tell me how to fix this please? Surely I'm not the only
one with the problem

Thanks
Robert
