FW: Spam mail warning notification! (MS-Update)

2003-09-22 Thread Schalk Erasmus
It is interesting to see that some of our colleagues belonging to the
FreeBSD Mailing List, are infected with the Worm.Swen virus!

I'm leaving this list, since I get hundreds of these DAMN MICROSOFT update
emails.

Luckily you can filter these stuff using TREND InterScan.

Cheers
Schalk

FreeBSD - Secure by DEFAULT ?? [hosts.allow]

2003-08-09 Thread Schalk Erasmus
Hi,

I need to know what the implications are to make use of the hosts.allow file
on a FreeBSD Production Server (ISP Setup)? The reason I'm asking, is that
I've recently decommisioned a Linux SendMail Server to a FreeBSD Exim
Server, but with no Firewall (IPTABLES) yet.

Besides the fact that it only runs EXIM and Apache, is it necessary to
Configure rc.Firewall? or can I only make use of the hosts.allow file?

Currently I would only like to allow SSH access from my Home Network,
instead of allowing the WORLD.

I've seen OpenBSD Servers using hosts.deny and hosts.allow files, but based
on the new Access Control File, it is all merged together in one file:

# hosts.allow access control file for tcp wrapped applications.
# $FreeBSD: src/etc/hosts.allow,v 1.8.2.7 2002/04/17 19:44:22 dougb Exp $
#

I take that I should allow the other Services, in this order:

sshd : myhomepc : allow
exim : ALL : allow
httpd : ALL : allow
ftpd : ALL : allow
ALL : ALL : deny

What kind of protection does FreeBSD need by Default? Since OpenBSD goes
around saying: SECURE BY DEFAULT !?

Just asking.

Marlon, just a quick heads up. freebsd-isp is a list specifically for the
discussion of technical issues involved with using FreeBSD at an ISP or
webhost. The questions you have been asking are not really ISP related. :)

 Cheers.

kernel files

2003-07-23 Thread Schalk Erasmus
Hi,

I would like to know, if it is safe to remove these files from /:

kernel.GENERIC
kernel.old

Since there is already a /kernel (which should be the current one, right?)

Version: 4.8-RC FreeBSD

RE: kernel files

2003-07-23 Thread Schalk Erasmus
I assume, the same applies to /tmp directory.

What type of Maintenance is required on a BSD Server, from time to time?

2003-06-25 Thread Schalk Erasmus
Hi,

I need some assistance to do a lookup from a Textfile of active users, and
then remove the Non-Active users (non listed users in Textfile) and
associated info, from the Radius USERS file.

We are running:

Cistron Radius Daemon

server# radiusd -v

Compilation flags: NOSHADOW ATTRIB_NMC COMPAT_1543

and example of the USERS file:
server# tail -n 10 /usr/local/etc/raddb/users

CROND - Command not found

2003-06-18 Thread Schalk Erasmus
Hi,

I've got a Script that is suppose to run every day:

The script works, when I login as root and run it manually!

# /etc/crontab - root's crontab for FreeBSD
#
# $FreeBSD: src/etc/crontab,v 1.21.2.3 2000/12/08
#
SHELL=/bin/sh
PATH=/etc:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin
HOME=/var/log
#
#minute hourmdaymonth wdaywho command
#
30 7 * * * root/MIRRORS/mirror.sh

BUT, it can't find the command: rsync

rsync: not found

Mirroring Apache Site...
rsync: not found

BUT, the rsync command do exist in the path:
PATH=/etc:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin

I copied the rsync command to /usr/sbin, but still no luck.

The original location is: /usr/local/bin:

pwd
/usr/local/bin
ll rsy*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 528616 May 17 15:24 rsync

Why can't CRON not find the command?

I also tried adding the above location to the CRONTAB path, but that didn't
work either.

I'm sure I'm missing something small.

Any assistance would be highly appreciated.

Schalk
