projects
I am currently tryin to learn sysadmin. is there a place were there are projects that I can practice on my box..I have just been searching the web for stuff to do with my box and have learned bits and pieces..but I want a little more structure. I have bought a few books but quickly tire of them just like the projects on the web because I have to search for days on the next step to learn how to do it.. I would like something that is step by step and progressive between steps...am I dreaming or is there something out there??? Re: solaris firewall?
I am sorry I offended people but I was sending this as a fellow freebsd user to my peers in order to gain opinion on it. I am offended people react in such a way as to bite someones head off for asking a question of this nature no matter if its a freebsd list m$ list or linux...who cares. Thanks to those of you who gave me some answers with out all the crap. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Shawn Henderson [EMAIL PROTECTED]; oclug [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Chris Gunderson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, January 10, 2003 6:44 AM Subject: Re: solaris firewall? Use ipf on solaris; it's what I do at work at least. But yeah, this is a FreeBSD list; it offended me that you posted here for that type of info. Another good place to try is irc.freenode.net (I think that's right), in #solaris. Don't try #solaris on efnet unless you're a Sun god, because they'll smack you worse than we will. Unix != FreeBSD != Solaris. 2/ There are two forms of Sun Firewall, from Sun. Sunscreen and Suncreen lite. Neither are great unless you have access to Sun's course notes for the software. 3/ If you want to compare Unix Firewalls, then try something like Ipcop as a starter, then replicate what it does, with freensd, then see how many of those packages then will work on solaris. -- Ian Watkinson To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe freebsd-hackers in the body of the message - SIUE Web Mail To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe freebsd-hackers in the body of the message To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe freebsd-questions in the body of the message
Re: FreeBSD + samba PDC vs Win2K clients
On my network I have a w2k server and a freebsd box, linux box and win95. I can see the linux and frebsd boxes and browse them from the win95 client but can only see them and not browse from win2k srvr. I am also very interested in this article and would love to see the post as they evolve. I promise that this is my last effort to elicit assistance in this area, if unsuccessful, I'll try using £inux or something. Has *any* list member succesfully got samba (version 2.2.6) running on FreeBSD 4.7 Stable running as a PDC for Win2K clients? If so, and you're able / willing to help me set this up, please let me know. For the benefit of the list membership, I'm willing to move off-list so as to not annoy list members that might be fed up of me filling up archive space with my questions on this topic. Stacey -- Stacey Roberts B.Sc (HONS) Computer Science Web: www.vickiandstacey.com Yeah, I just did this recently.. there was an article created via IBM that was quite helpful, I will see if i can dig it up. on a side note though, have you made any changes to the win2k registry or the security profiles? You have to turn off a digital signing on the 2k box to get thigns working.. I dont remember what exactly it was, but i will look later today.. in the mean time i bet a google search on developer works ibm and samba will get you to the article.. -- Andrew Stuart http://www.tekrealm.net I took a course in speed reading and was able to read War and Peace in twenty minutes. Re: FreeBSD Router/Firewall Questions
One advantage is you can keep you current subnet and with the freebsd box you could run a whole another subnet with it .. or it can be used just to learn and play. But with a dlink already in the network Iwould use it as a play thing and try new things on that box. I like to use p1 and below for small routers anything above is a good test platform for new projects I want to learn - Original Message - From: RD [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 31, 2002 4:08 PM Subject: FreeBSD Router/Firewall Questions Hi guys, me again :) well I've been reading up on compiling a kernel for nat and ipfw. I'm running a d-link 704 router now. I want some input here... I have an extra box (p200 - 128ram) for a router firewall.. I was thinking about it being my Gateway/Router/Firewall for my other 3 computers. I run a webserver box, a ftp server box, and my workstation box behind my d-link. What advantages/disadvantages would I have by running freebsd in place of the d-link? How do I connect this? Do I use 2 eithernets 1 to net and 1 to a hub? I also have 1 crossover rj45 cable for card to card connection that I haven't tried yet...
