Just for the record. The FAQ link above was very helpful and I now have
my old, single disk installation spread across two new, fat hard disks
and everything is working great. dump | restore was also very easy to
use and very quick.

Thanks heaps!

Copy old drive to new drive - is it possible?

2004-02-21 Thread Tig
Hi, I have a hard drive which is on its last legs. I also have new hard
drive to replace the old one. I was wondering if it is possible to
simply copy everything from the old drive to the new (after formating
the new drive) and have my system back up and running, or do I need to
reinstall the OS and everything else?

Tips, URL's or a simple 'from personal experience, best to reinstall'
comments more than welcome.

Thanks for your time.

failing hardware panic

2004-01-23 Thread Tig
I'm running a FreeBSD 5.2 system and have just started getting a
panic/reboot problem. It *appears* to be a hard drive issue. I'm not
sure where to start, however, in trying to work out which for the 3 IDE
drives has the problem. What commands/tools can I use that will help me
to identify the failing disk? (never had a disk fail before)

Thanks for any replies.
