old modem?

2006-11-25 Thread opbc
Greetings to all,
I just upgraded my old IBM 300PL from FreeBSD 4.2 - FreeBSD 6.1.
Everything works, as before EXCEPT my old USRobotics 33.6 modem (with
jumpers).

6.1 doesn’t seem to find or recognize the modem. It is set to com1, IRQ4.

KPPP finds the modem sometimes, like after a complete powerdown then
restart – but does not initialize it or dial the numbers.

What I’m wondering is if this modem is too old for 6.1 to deal with. And,
if so, what kind of modem is BEST for 6.1.

I know this would be a question for “newbies” but alas, “newbies” does not
exist now-a-days.

Please help, and thank you in advance.

Ciao,

6.1 package add from disk 2

2006-10-30 Thread opbc
Greetings to all,
I’m proud to be upgrading from 4.2 – 6.1 this morning.
After the initial install, from disk one, I want to add some stuff that I
like AND make X work, KDE and all that .

With sysinstall, it tells me to put in disk 2 for some of the packages. It
starts to read them, then displays a great deal of “failure” to add package
error messages.

Q: is this a common occurrence?
Is this what happens with 6.1?

What else may be causing this?

Re: upgrade 4.2-?

2006-10-27 Thread opbc

Hello Jerry,
Thank you for your response.
I am about to acquire the 6.1 disks from friends in Butte, MT.
That will solve my little problem.

:-)
Grins,

I think you can do a series of successive cvsups and makes and merges
and do it all, but since 4.2 is much different than 6.xx, and since that
would involve several successive updates it might be quicker and easier
to just back up what you need to save and to a clean new install to the
latest version. (That would be 6.1 at the moment, but 6.2 is scheduled
to be out shortly - schedule says Nov 13).

Then reload what you need from backups and voila, you're ready to run
 again.

Otherwise, read carefully the sections in the FreeBSD handbook on cvsup
and updating and make buildxxx and make installxxx and mergemaster.
Follow those instructions and it will work.

kppp DNS problem?

2006-10-23 Thread opbc

  Hello to all,

It's been about 5 years since I've posted to this list (back then
it was newbies).

  I'm using freeBSD 4.2; KDE on X.

kppp works as advertised, except for one little problem.

my primary and secondary DNS servers are as follows:

  ns1.hosting.trueband.net

  ns2.hosting.trueband.net

All well and good - BUT the kppp config untility will only allow
numbers to be entered into the utility!

Please suffer this ol' burn-out from the 60's some advice.  What to
do, where?

  Thank you in advance.
