The packages are built from the ports tree itself. Therefore if your
ports tree matches the one that is used to build the packages exactly
you will have no problems.
If your ports tree is newer you will have no problems attempting to
upgrade using a port.
However if you want to use packages a

I see there are two ports:
/usr/ports/audio/mpc
/usr/ports/math/mpc
When I run 'pkg_add -r mpc' the first one gets installed, there is 'All'
directory under packages, here all of them from all subdirectories are
dropped.

i had to do the same last week. i downgraded both lang/php5 and
lang/php5-extensions. php5-extensions was a little
fussy due to some ports being removed from the tree as they were now
included in php5-5.3.2 base.
portdowngrade seems is what I need.
So, I run it:

Please note, that nothing is changed in the ports tree
unless it is explicitly permitted in step 6!

After # portsnap fetch extract, I see only PHP 5.3.2 in ports, but no
5.2.x.

For MySQL, for example, there are both 5.0.x and 5.1.x in ports

Yes, if your system is older than 6.0 on i386 and older then 7.0 on
amd64, it is still ignored, since we do not support those platforms.
Otherwise it must be okay.

I tried to update my system from KDE-4.3.1 (came in FreeBSD 8 install CDs)
to KDE-4.3.5( in updated ports system)
but it gives error during the compilation of QT related code(libpng.so not
found for compile of libQTsvg.so,or so).
Are there binaries for KDE-4.3.5 for updating my KDE to 4.3.5

As far as I know, the gnat-gcc44 bootstrap binaries will be
fine as they're bundled with the libgmp library that was used
to build them. Whether gcc
A switch to use newer GMP version has been committed.
Unfortunately lang/ghc and dependent ports (and possibly
lang/gnat-gcc44) were broken by this. The brokenness wasn't detected in
our -exp run because of being masked by other issues.
It will take a few days to fix lang/ghc.
