In linux, there is mii-tools

Peter,
try typing ifconfig on the command line
it will give you lots of information about your nic, ie on mine:
$ ifconfig
fxp0: flags=8843UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST mtu 1500
inet 192.168.3.8 netmask 0xff00 broadcast 192.168.3.255
inet6
