Thanks to all of you that responded. I did not want to install Apache just to have something listening on port 80. So I edited /etc/services and commented out the http 80 statements and the telnet 23 statements and them copied the telnet tcp statement and changes it's port to 80. Enabled inetd in rc.conf. I used one of my LAN PC's to telnet into to port 80 and it worked. I then called my friend with winme box who uses different ISP. He logged on and used native dos to try to telnet into my port 25 and 80. In both cases he was not able to connect to my IP address. Just run tc= pdump / ethereal (or any sniffer) on a PC at your place and telnet throug= h the Internet to your IP address on ports 110, 80, 25. I get hit twice (within milliseconds) in a row at least every couple of hours to port 80 from addresses in Adelphia's range. The addresses change every about every two weeks, but the rate remains constant. I've tried everything to get a response from them...to no avail. Well, to get to the point, I wouldn't run any servers on their standard ports. Dyndns has something called the port redirect wizard (http://www.dyndns.org/services/mywebhop/) where you run a server on a non-standard port and the client doesn't need to know about it. -- Stephen L. That's a common setup.

Switch to an ISP that doesn't object to you running servers.
If you violate your ISP's AUPs, they'll simply cut you off.
Some ISPs run port scans or log their users' traffic, so
you may end up appearing on their radar anyway.

Just start your servers, and check wether you can reach them
from the outside.

* Open as few ports as possible to the outside ("sockstat -46"
is your friend).
* It's your responsiblity to check that you don't operate an
open relay!
You should monitor your box closely (i.e. use tripwire etc...),
and tread on the side of caution.

See if you can send and receive mail...
