Actually, the native "dos" mode versions of telnet came standard starting
with Win2k but I won't go into that. :)

The syntax is start > run > telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx port#

RE: how to tell if my ISP is blocking email & web ports

2004-01-22 Thread fbsd_user
Thanks to all of you that responded.

I did not want to install Apache just to have something listening
on port 80. So I edited /etc/services and commented out the
http 80 statements and the telnet 23 statements and them copied
the telnet tcp statement and changes it's port to 80.
Enabled inetd in rc.conf.

I used one of my LAN PC's to telnet into to port 80 and it worked.
I then called my friend with winme box who uses different ISP.
He logged on and used native dos to try to telnet into my
port 25 and 80. In both cases he was not able to connect to my
IP address.
This proves that Adelphia cable service is blocking those 2 ports.

Telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 25

My friends PC is an MS/Windows 98 box.
I know all windows system have telnet in command.com.
Which is reachable from start/run and opens an native dos window.

Would anybody know the syntax of the native dos telnet command
to include the port number to use?

telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx would get me to the telnet port
at that IP address.

why not just enable sendmail, apache and pop3 on your home box and
telnet
to ports 25, 80 and 110 respectively from your friend's pc to see if
it
works ?

Hi,

>From Adelphia's terms of service:

"You may not operate a server of any type using the Adelphia Broadband
Service."

Here is the link if you want to check it out:

http://www.adelphia.com/esafety/Inter_Acc_Serv_Agmnt_08_27_03.pdf

I use adelphia as well, last time I port scanned myself from the outside I
got hit on ports 80, 25 etc.

Though I do suspect Adelphia of setting up "drone" machines scanning for
at least web (80)...maybe others. I get hit twice (within milliseconds) in
a row at least every couple of hours to port 80 from addresses in
Adelphia's range. The addresses change every about every two weeks, but
the rate remains constant. I've tried everything to get a response from
them...to no avail.

Well, to get to the point, I wouldn't run any servers on their standard
ports. Dyndns has something called the port redirect wizard
(http://www.dyndns.org/services/mywebhop/) where you run a server on a
non-standard port and the client doesn't need to know about it.

Switch to an ISP that doesn't object to you running servers.

If you violate your ISP's AUPs, they'll simply cut you off.
Some ISPs run port scans or log their users' traffic, so
you may end up appearing on their radar anyway.

> So I need a way to test if the ports are blocked or not using an

Just start your servers, and check wether you can reach them
from the outside.

> What do you recommend?

* Track -STABLE or -CURRENT regularly, esp. after security
  advisories.
* Open as few ports as possible to the outside ("sockstat -46"
  is your friend).
* It's your responsiblity to check that you don't operate an
  open relay!

You should monitor your box closely (i.e. use tripwire etc...),
and tread on the side of caution.

Okay...

I have 24/7 cable internet connection plus an registered
domain name which goes no place right now.
Err... you have DSL then.. most likely..

Do you have a static IP? Also, in order to do the above, you will need to
run DNS, or some variant, tinydns so that the world knows where to find
you. Otherwise, you have an exercise in futility.
I know I can not ask my ISP's tech support if they block
ports 110, 25, and 80, because they will get suspicious
and monitor my account. Want to stay under their radar.
Probably wise, but most likely, they don't care.

So I need a way to test if the ports are blocked or not using an
friends PC and my current IP address.
What do you recommend?
1. From your mail headers, your ISP is adelphia.net. I don't think they
block anything.. you can google for them, and blocking for example.

2. You can go look on their home page, to see if they make mention whether
they block certain ports, or look at their terms of service.

3. Just set up DNS, your MTA, and let'r rip. See if you can send and
receive mail... Might take a day or two for the DNS to kick in.
