I have also had problems with my path
not being set correctly in single user mode.
This can be caused by not having /root/.profile linked to your / directory.
Mergemaster used to ask about correcting this, but it doesn't seem to do
so lately.

single user then run csh .cshrc IIRC this should set your environment
