The posts you saw were maybe mine: I have one such system: 6-STABLE on
LS21, Opteron. You need to run at least FreeBSD 6.3 to support the
network controller and possibly the QLogic FC controller. The only
serious issue might be umass (compile it out from the kernel once you
install the system, otherwise the boot process will wait a long time). I
still didn't try 7.0-RELEASE on it so it might not work. Otherwise, the
machine is working and is very solid - no problems at all once the
installation and configuration is done.

Somebody using FreeBSD IBM Blade hardware in production?

Hello Maximillian,

I'm not using it myself, but a friend of mine is running FreeBSD
6.1-STABLE on IBM BladeCenter LS20, AMD Opteron 2.4GHz/800 MHz. He
says the big problems are getting the BladeCenter's USB console
working across reboots and multipathing the HBAs. His FreeBSD blades
boot of the SAN and they all have dual HBAs. Since FreeBSD 6.1 has
zero multipath support, he has to disable one of the HBA for the boot
process to work.

I think FreeBSD 7.0 is a *lot* better with respect to the USB console.
But I have no idea about the HBA multipath support?

Anyway, if you do have more specific questions, please feel free to
send them to me. I'd forward them to my friend or hook you two
together.

HTH,

David

Qlogic QMH2462 Fibre Channel on HP Blade Servers

2007-01-24 Thread Greg Himes

Hello All,

I'm trying to install 6.2 Release on an HP blade,
but the isp driver doesn't recognize the new Qlogic
fibre channel adapters. I also tried stopping at the
boot loader and manually loading /boot/kernel/isp.ko,
but the fibre channel still doesn't work.

Because of the way the blades are managed, I can't
capture the device info at boot time. However,
they are seen as serial fibre channel devices by pci.

Is there a patch for isp forthcoming? Any suggestions?

(I'm only subscribed to freebsd-isp, so please copy me
with any replies)

Greg

A model number, chipset or PCI ID would be helpful here. If it's
integrated FC controller then what model blade is it?

Also, another thing that was mentioned to me was the ability to 'boot on
SAN', instead of having drives in the Blade itself ... is this something
that can be done with FreeBSD, and, if so, is there anywhere on the web I
can read up on this?

Booting is reliant on the BIOS - if the BIOS supports booting off a
disk-like device then you can (AFAIK) be sure that FreeBSD will boot.
Getting beyond booting depends on the kernel having a suitable driver.

Blade Servers w/ SAN backend ... anyone doing this?

2005-09-14 Thread Marc G. Fournier

I'm talking to my supplier about going this root, and am having problems
finding out if I can even do it :(

I was pointed to jcagle's page on the HP Blade stuff
(http://people.freebsd.org/~jcagle), but what I can't seem to find is how
to connect the Blade-SAN ...

From what little I've learnt so far, there is an HP Fiber Channel

Is anyone running such a configuration right now?

3upsystems.com sales department told me yesterday they have FreeBSD
support, and they can fit 12 blade servers in a 4u chassis, but they are
a little hard on the wallet. Just not worth it for our company.
