FreeBSD 7-STABLE +Gnome +Compiz-Fusion?

2008-08-17 Thread Stacey Roberts
Hi,
I'm trying to get Compiz-Fusion + Gnome to work on my newly (completed
installation + initial upgrades last night) installed IBM T43p notebook,
but I'm not sure that I'm doing this right..,

Basically, I've: -

1] Installed OS
2] Upgraded OS to latest Stable as of (early AM) Aug 17th 2008
3] Upgraded install-time ports (portupgrade, cvsup, etc)
4] Installed XORG
5] Installed compiz-fusion from ports
6] installed gnome2 from ports
7] Tried following instructions located here:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/articles/compiz-fusion/index.html

I can log into Gnome desktop fine, but running the suggested cmds:

% compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp
% emerald --replace

as per the article above, doesn't appear to do anything. I mean, what else
is there that I need to do, besides, please?

Here's some system info:

$ uname -a
FreeBSD snipped 7.0-STABLE FreeBSD 7.0-STABLE #0: Sat Aug
16 19:49:12 BST 2008
root@snipped:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/IRON i386

compiz-fusion-plugins-extra-0.6.0_2
compiz-fusion-0.6.0_1
$ pkg_info -a | grep -i gnome2-2 | head -1
gnome2-2.22.3
$ pkg_info -a | grep -i xorg-server | head -1
xorg-server-1.4.2,1
$

Graphics card: ATI Technologies Inc M22 [Mobility Radeon X300]

Any help or pointers appreciated, please.

Thanks!

S Roberts

The article deals with nvidia-driver only.
I currently don't have any ATI card, hence I can't find the settings
required in xorg.conf for this to work.

If I get a chance to try ATI, I will update the article.
(I am planning to update it for Intel cards though)

Thanks!

Well, the best I can say is:

- Verify that 3D is working on this card with the open source driver
(you don't have a choice of drivers anyway)
- Check whether compiz-fusion works in Linux with this particular card
and the open source driver.

- If it does, find a suggested xorg.conf and compare it to yours.

Hmm.., the article though, at

does state If you are using another card, that you know can handle

Will keep looking around some more though.., Hopefully someone else has
worked on this combitnation in the past, somewhere..,

Thanks again for responding.

Well, the article is right to the point that you will not install nvidia
drivers on an ATI card ;)
However as I understand 3D support in ATI is a hit and miss even in
Linux (and ATI's proprietary driver is awful).
The xorg.conf settings in the article have only been tested with nvidia,
and may need some adjustment for other 3D capable cards. I've been told
they don't work with Intel, but will investigate this on my eeePC soon.

As for your ATI, a quick search shows that 3D with AIGLX is supported by
the open source drivers in X300. I've found several xorg.conf samples,
so it is probably a matter of doing a bit of research. If you do find
the magic line that makes it work, I would be glad to hear about it
and add it to the article.

You *might* be able to build compiz-fusion without all those gnome
packages by:

# cd /usr/ports/x11-wm/compiz-fusion
# make config

and unticking the gconf option and then building it.

If I was in your position, I'd leave it unless you're short of disk
space or other resources eg. cpu, ram. Gnome is pretty much essential
if you're going to use X a lot since a lot of things depend on it.
Although, if you're running KDE associated apps you might be able to
get away without it.

glib is just another port/package ie. not part of the base system and
you can add/update it without any ill-effects. Check
/usr/ports/UPDATING first though, as you always should before
adding/upgrading ports/packages.

HTH.

logout problem after running Compiz Fusion

2008-04-23 Thread Novembre
Hi all,

I have installed Compiz Fusion on my machine, which has Intel 965G chipset,
using packages. I am running it on Xfce 4.4.2 on X.org 7.3_1 on FreeBSD
7.0-RELEASE. Compiz starts fine and is working fine, but I have some
problems with it, as follows.

My xorg.conf is uploaded to http://pastebin.com/f649537ab and is configured
according to instructions found at
http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/Intel%20with%20AiGLX

I run Compiz with these commands:
--
LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1; export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT
INTEL_BATCH=1; export INTEL_BATCH
compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp
emerald --replace
--
I found the first two lines in the above-mentioned wiki page, and the last
two are from FreeBSD's guide at
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/articles/compiz-fusion/index.html

First problem is that I cannot log out of X.org, since it seems that the
system locks up. The background image on the desktop stays on the screen,
and I don't get dropped to the console. However, I can restart the system by
pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del. Since I can't see anything other than my background
image, I don't know whether I can run other commands or not. Here's what
gets added to /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old after I try to log out of Xfce:
--
(II) intel(0): [drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernel
(II) intel(0): [drm] unmapping 8192 bytes of SAREA 0xc57de000 at 0x28805000
(II) intel(0): [drm] Closed DRM master.

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting
--

The second problem which happens occasionally (e.g. right now) is that it's
sometimes slow and sometimes with very good response. For example, when I am
typing this email now, I can feel that there's a lag or when I'm switching
windows or moving them around.

Any ideas on how to fix these (especially the first one)?

Thanks a lot :)

I'm glad I asked the question! By the way ccsm works also within gnome,
so you can use both gconf and ccsm under gnome.

Manolis, this seems to be a very nice work! I'm interested in
committing it into the FreeBSD doc repository if you can send me the

Thanks for your great work.

Let me just have a final look and maybe correct a few minor things, and
I will email you the sources later today.

I have it working now but there are two issues that I seem not to be
able to solve. First compiz will start when x starts but emerald
won't start and I get no window borders and can't move them. Solution
is to open the terminal window and run emerald --replace . Second
issue is with compiz, I open ccsm to configure my 3d effects but they
won't get saved, it will let me select them or unselect them but once
I close ccsm and run it again every change is gone and the defaults
are back. Any Ideas? Do the users have to be members of a special
  group?

I run compiz by hand, I don't need it on all the time. I will
investigate these and get back to you.

Gnome will also complain if you run these commands without
installing /usr/ports/x11-themes/ubuntulooks first, once you install this
it will stop complainning. I will try to find out why I can't use ccsm
and if I find out I will let you know.

I don't know about KDE, but I am using compiz-fusion (manually) in gnome
 without having installed ubuntulooks.
Thanks for your investigation and feedback. If you come up with a
complete set of settings, I will update the article.

The only way to fix gnome and get the settings to save was to delete the user
and recreate it again. I found out what causes compiz to act weird like this
is when you try to run compiz with different options than the ones you gave
me. If that happens than you have to recreate the user account. Deleting
the .config directory is not enough, don't know why.

Do not forget to update your article by adding the at the end of the
compiz and emerald commands. If they get run without sign at the end,
compiz will start acting weird on you.

Thanks for your help, it's working very well now.

Thanks, I just updated the article, you may want to have a look at it
again. Quick link here:

http://store.itsyourftp.com/~sonic2000gr/freebsd/compiz-fusion/article.html

I added the and the script for GNOME.
I found out compiz-fusion saves setting in gconf, if you have it
compiled with gconf support (like I did). My guess is if this is not
selected, it will use the .compizconfig folder. I have not tested this
though (but maybe will recompile just to see).
It is quite possible that deleting the apps/compiz key in gconf will
restore any weird behaviour, instead of actually recreating the user.

I have tested this as a startup script in Gnome:

I have entered this in Sessions as a Startup Program and it works fine.
I am also able to change settings with ccsm (which should also be run as
the normal user, BTW) and the settings are saved.
Now, I don't really know where these are saved, documentation mentions a
.compizconfig folder, but I don't have it.

I don't have ubuntu-looks installed.

I don't have KDE installed on this machine, so can't test with this.

Actually just found out there are three different backends for saving

http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/CCSM#head-340a755b8f870831a20b51544a116f6dc4795735

namely gconf, KConfig and flat files

(look at the bottom of the page)

I have compiled compiz-fusion with gconf support, the settings in
gconf-editor are under apps/compiz.

You may wish to check what options you used during compilation.

I will update the article tomorrow to reflect all this.

Alphons

P.S. I found this stashed in a folder meant for future reference:

Assuming you have already setup you X server for composite, to run
 compiz-fusion enter these commands:

 (as normal user)

 compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-dekstop-hints ccp
 emerald --replace

I agree. There should be docs for Compiz-Fusion on FreeBSD. There isn't
any right now as far as I know.

Is there a tutorial on how to configure compiz fusion on FBSD 6.3 /

instructions since they are written for a couple of linux distros.

ports question / compiz-fusion

2008-01-29 Thread Nerius Landys
I hope this is the right list for this topic.
I'm trying to run compiz-fusion on my desktop. I've already installed the
x11-wm/compiz-fusion port from sources; it all installed well. Since my
internet search for how to actually run the thing on FreeBSD ran pretty dry,
I've been trying to follow instructions for other [Linux] distributions.
But things don't seem to work. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to
run compiz-fusion after a successful install? I'd prefer to run with Xfce,
but Gnome is acceptable too. A pointer to a doc would help.

I am playing around with compiz-fusion for a while now on Xfce4. To get
started I autostart the following simple script once Xfce is running
(which probably can be done better):

#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/killall compiz
/usr/bin/killall emerald
sleep 2
/usr/local/bin/compiz --replace ccp
/usr/local/bin/emerald --replace

After that, all you need to do is to configure Emerald and compiz so it
fits your needs with:

%emerald-theme-manager
%ccsm

Both programs can be found in the right click menu of xfce under
settings.
