However, I'm not too familiar with using the patch utility, in what
directory shall I be when applying the patch.
Do you or anyone else know a good tutorial/how-to on this issue?

when installing the latest Transcode port the installation ends with
the following row, please let me know if you want more of the output.
I installed it using
> make WITH_AVIFILE=yes WITH_DIVX5=yes install
My system is a 5.1 with regular cvsup's done.
