The ISO file is an image that is ready for burning to a CD or DVD. The file
you should download depends upon the kind of hardware your running. Please
describe the hardware you are using.

I strongly advise you to read the installation section of the online
handbook before attemtping to install the operating system. The most arcane
part for newbies is probably partitioning the hard drive.

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/

It would also be good if you have either a friend who runs FreeBSD nearby or
a second computer with internet access running. That way you can get help
quickly. The installation isn't really difficult; but if you're a newbie,
you might have questions or start second-guessing your choices.

Best of luck,

Andrew

install CD.

if you have good network connection - download small "bootonly CD".
it will then fetch all needed by the net.

but do read a handbook.

Then welcome to FreeBSD! I'm sure you'll have a great time
learning about FreeBSD and of course using it. :-)

This depends on what you're going to do. In most cases, the ISO
for a bootable CD or DVD is needed. Which version you will have to
download depends on the hardware you're going to install the OS on.

The ISO is a pre-mastered file system (ISO 9660) that you usually
record onto a CD or DVD. The distribution directories contain the
"plain files". Easiest thing: Go with the ISO.

Have a look at FreeBSD's excellent documentation. The
most interesting for you will surely be:

Well, some of this is covered well in the FreeBSD Handbook and some
other documents that are all available online starting at the
  http://www.freebsd.org/ web site.
Even after that it can be a little confusing at first about how to
find just which ISO you want to download.

First determine what is the highest level RELEASE available. At the
beginning, do not worry about -STABLE and -CURRENT.

At the moment, the latest RELEASE is 7.2

Next determine the hardware you want to install on. That will
probably be either i386 for regular 32 bit or AMD64 for 64 bit
machines, though there are other possibilities.

The next thing to do is to familiarize yourself with the site for
downloading the ISOs. Just do an anonymous ftp in and look around.

ftp toftp.freebsd.org and log in as anonymous
Use your email address as a password.

You can do an 'ls' in each of the directories you enter to see what is there.
In that first directory you will see only one item -- the pub directory.
So, cd to it.   Do;
  cd pub
In that directory you will see there is only the FreeBSD directory so
cd to that. Do:
cd FreeBSDnote that it is case sensitive so cd freebsd won't work.

In the FreeBSD directory, when you do an ls you will see lots of stuff
including files, directories and links. You can look at these things
but you will eventually want to cd to 'releases' and then to 'i386' or
to 'amd64'

Then cd to 'ISO-IMAGES' and finally to '7.2'

In that directory you will see the .iso files you want to download.
If your internet connection is good enough, then you only need to
download the disc1.iso file and burn it to CD.
You may also want to download the CHECKSUM.MD5 and use that to
verify the good/clean transmission of the .iso file.

After that you are ready to move on to the installation - although
you should read and learn about it so you know what you want to do.

Hi Oronsaye,

Welcome to the FreeBSD mailing list.

You can start by downloading a ISO from here:

http://www.freebsd.org/where.html

The one you must download depends on the hardware you are going to
install on. A "standard desktop PC" normally is an i386, so you should
download in this case this file:

ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/ISO-IMAGES/7.2/7.2-RELEASE-i386-disc1.iso

If you browse the FTP folder (
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/ISO-IMAGES/7.2/ ) you
will see that there are another two disc images (ISOs whose name ends in
disc2 and disc3). You will require them also depending on the packages
you select to install, but with the first one you should have enought
for a minimum installation.

Once downloaded the ISO, burn it to a CD and boot you computer from this
CD, remember that all the data on that PC will be lost.

Another option, is to boot the iso from any virtualization software such
as vmware or VirtualBox.

Remember that you can follow the details of the installation procedure
and several administrative tasks on the very useful FreeBSD handbook:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/

Matias.
