I installed x windows with sysinstall, then i installed blackbox (a window manager).
Then if x server is not started and i execute blackbox command i get a error like
this: x server not started something like this. If i start xserver and then run the
blackbox command, i get another error

to me there is no such thing as `the best version'
imho any version will do fine, you can select what you want to install
and what you don't want.
i don't know any exact numbers, but i guess you could easily achieve a
100-300 MB installation if you just installed the essential stuff (just
basically any is fine, the main desicion that you have to make is if you
want to install new software from source, or use the binary updates from
the ports system...
