I don't know what the problem may be:
I got my iso from bittorent and it was fast, so if you can use bt you
can get the torrents here
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/torrents/6.0-RELEASE

falls to low.
It all most never works with a dial up connection.
Try native FTP pgm to download instead of firefox.
Problem is definitely at your end.
Trying using a internet cafe pc to download the iso file and burn it
to cd.
