The answer to my own question is: don't try to add printer using KDE... use the CUPS web interface instead. I didn't get the smb deal working, but I was able to attach to it as an lpr spool using the generic postscript driver. Unexpectedly, the quality of the print is a bit better than it was when this printer was directly connected to my FreeBSD box. Thanks to Kirk, Warren and Andrew for the helpful suggestions.
