I did some reading and found this.

The third ata channel has to be turned on in the bios and configured 
to be raid or ata.  Did you do this?

It has a Promise R20378 controller on it on raid mode and may not be 
bsd compatible.

Yes, I did. I enabled it, and set it to standard ATA 133 mode (the RAID mode is 
different, and forms a RAID, together with the Via chipset).
