Can you do anything else that hits the machine with high disk I/O?

If this an SMP enabled kernel? If so does the same thing occur if you use a
non-smp enabled kernel?

Here are a few things I would try:

Update all the firmware in both dells.  Then run the dell diagnostics to 
see if ANYTHING shows up as a problem.


Check your disk space and swap, make sure you have enough of both.

If it still is causing problems do your best to find a repeatable case to 
post in detail like it breaks when compiling some part of the kernel everytime.
