vmware2 gives UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP
Back when I was using vmware2 on an Athlon 1.4 running 4.5-RELEASE, vmware2 worked great (albeit a little sluggish)! After recently purchasing an Athlon XP 3000+, I opened my vmware archives and using the same configuration I was unable to get vmware to run well. If I try to fresh boot win2k as the Guest OS or if I try running the 2k install CD, I get the following blue screen, immediately after the first Windows 2000 logo/graphic: *** STOP: 0x007F (0x000D,0x,0x,0x) UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP The error is consistant and I've tried a plethora of different configuration settings. The only information I was able to find online was at a Korean FreeBSD site; since I can't read Korean and AltaVista's translator did a worthless job, that was a dead end. I ran MemTest v3.0 both natively and in the VM and had no troubles. I suspect the problem is related to an XFree86 misconfiguration. Any suggestions at all are appreciated. On a related note, I considered purchasing VMWare 4.0 Workstation but noticed there was no FreeBSD port; there are separate maintainers for the 2.x 3.x ports so I'm not sure who to contact; I would be willing to help a maintainer get a vmware4 port working. There were a number of other compile-time warnings before the one you listed. My guess is that /sys/sys/param.h might be getting pulled into the compile when it did not used to be pulled into it, but that is a very shaky guess. Please note that I am not likely to look into this any farther, because what I think I finally determined is that vmware2 simply does not work on my new PC (it builds fine, but crashes when I try to run it, on both stable and current). I still run it on my older PC, but that PC is running freebsd-stable, and needs to stay that way for now. -- Garance Alistair Drosehn= [EMAIL PROTECTED] Senior Systems Programmer or [EMAIL PROTECTED] Rensselaer Polytechnic Instituteor [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you for verifying this. I myself had to move to -CURRENT a couple of weeks ago because of a new PC, and waited until the latest patch was committed by the port maintainer to make it compile under -CURRENT. My guess is that /sys/sys/param.h might be getting pulled into the compile when it did not used to be pulled into it, but that is a very shaky guess. At this point I might try to trace the preprocessor output during the build process, up to the line where the error occurs. vmware2: vmware startup kills host interface
Hi all, i installed the vmware2 port and it works fine execpt for networking. I selected Netgraph bridging and bind to interface sis0, which is my machine's NIC. When i do /usr/local/etc/rc.d/vmware start, the module gets loaded, and my internet connection gets killed. Since this is a diskless workstation, i have to reboot. I browsed the archive, and found many problems w/ vmware networking, but not this one. BTW, should this be posted to questions@ or to ports@ ? I would normally post it to ports@, but saw most postings at questions@ I use FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE. can someone help? OK, I'm stuck. Nothing goes wright. I installed vmware2 from ports, but after I can't get it running. vmware-configure.pl is a script for linux as it asks for insmod to isntall modules. Yet, there is some work to be done, because I get notices like 'vmmon not installed' etc. Can anybody tell me exactly what I need to do AFTER I installed vmware from ports? I found out I had to mount linprocfs, but that was easy ;-) Now the rest..
