I have freshly install a HPXW4200 ( i386 ) but
sound system does not work

I have gnome installed and all the above services are running

nfs_client_enable=YES
sshd_enable=YES

dovecot_enable=YES
dbus_enable=YES
gdm_enable=YES
hald_enable=YES
avahi_daemon_enable=YES

Have you loaded the sound driver? Check /dev/sndstat to see if it's
running.

when I try to use the gnome sound manager it says

nothing

so it's all fine with config. i would do sent-pr because it's driver 
problem. I think it's just matter of simple quirk with not-really-compatible 
hardware.

Would you try to change the phout mixer setting instead of vol ?
e.g.:

 mixer phout 100

The ALSA driver has a quirk for HP XW4200.
