I've got portaudit installed & the database was just updated
several days ago, as well as the ports with portsnap & portupgrade.
Have checked the last week or so of the cvs mailing list for samba
& found nothing, so I didn't rerun portsnap & portupgrade. Already
so many dependencies installed for apsfilter, I hated to update
anything else right in the middle of all of this. Tried running the
make command with -DIGNORE_VULNERABILITIES but still no dice. Any
advice, pointers to reading up on it, help, appreciated.

Denny,

Samba3 is in the ports try that instead.

Thanks for the advice, Robert. Did it. Found the proper printer
driver & set it up. Took a long time to connect to an ftp server
that had it (in case someone else has to do the same thing, don't
cancel, it'll find a server eventually that has it). Apsfilter
is setup now. Still have to fiddle with Samba settings. Had it
setup once before a long time back when I was running FreeBSD
4.7, I believe, on my old laptop. It'll just take some patience
& tinkering. Thanks again for the help.

The problem doesn't seem to be date-related but an error message that is
included in what you pasted:

CPUTYPE global should be set with ?=.

Does your /etc/make.conf file set CPUTYPE unconditionally with something
like this:

CPUTYPE=pentium4

?

Here is my make.conf file after I adjusted the cuptype to i686.
I have a P4.

CPUTYPE?=i686
MAKE_SHELL?=csh

I'm a little confused...
Can someone give me a hint towards debugging the LC returned non-zero

I went into bios and reset the time to local time, CST. The clock was

(Many thanks to csghost for the help.)

Just to record the solution, here is how to fix this problem.

The issue is that GNU make is being called rather than /usr/bin/make. On my
system (5.3-RELEASE), GNU make had blown away /usr/bin/make and replaced it
with a symlink to /usr/local/bin/gmake. (I guess this happened when I did a
"pkg_add -r gmake". Perhaps this should be reported as a "bug" ... )

The way around this is to rebuild make. Its source is
in /usr/src/usr.bin/make. Unfortunately, the makefile will not build with
gmake. Fortunately, there is another make in the system, /usr/bin/umake.
You can use this version of make to remake /usr/bin/make.

So,

 # cd /usr/src/usr.bin/make
 # umake
 # cp make /usr/bin/make
 # cd /usr/bin
 # make -j4 buildworld

Check your PATH. GNU Make should not be used to compile the sources.
pmake (/usr/bin/make) should be used for this.
You've probably installed 'gmake' as 'make' in /usr/local/bin, and have
/usr/local/bin before /usr/bin in your path. Therefore, the wrong
version of make gets called.

Success, finally. I read up a little more on xmkmf, and tried the

xmkmf -a
make

and it compiled successfully. So I am not sure why it went wrong

Hmmm. There's no "ansi" or "machine" string in that Makefile.

No - I reinstalled a "vanilla" 5.3, and deleted the old Makefile and
object file. It seems that xmkmf operating on the Imakefile that I
showed above produces an invalid Makefile, with references to ansi.h and
others.

You can see the Makefile it produces at
http://members.rogers.com/Makefile.

Once again, thanks for taking so much trouble. I have a nasty suspicion
it will turn out to be a silly "oops" on my part.

Hmmm, there is no /usr/include/machine/ansi.h header in FreeBSD. Have
you been trying to run xmkmf on one system and then use the generated
makefiles on a different system (i.e. generate the Makefiles on Linux
but build on Solaris or BSD)?

Sorry for the long delay in replying. Since October 19th, I installed

Without actually reading the entire source, I tried building this with
an Imakefile that contains exactly the text you sent in your previous
post. It builds fine here, even if I set my CFLAGS to a set of
relatively strict warnings before invoking xmkmf and/or make:

CFLAGS='-O -W -Wall -Wbad-function-cast -Wcast-align -Wcast-qual \
-Wchar-subscripts -Winline -Wmissing-prototypes -Wnested-externs \
-Wpointer-arith -Wredundant-decls -Wshadow -Wstrict-prototypes \
-Wwrite-strings'

Are you getting compile-time errors?
If yes, what are they?
Does your environment contain any CFLAGS or CC variables?

You can see the source of one of these programs at
http://members.rogers.com/mike.jeays/lst.c

It is not minimal, but it is all in one file, and it does compile
correctly under FreeBSD 4.1 on another machine, simply by issuing xmkmf
against the Imake file above, followed by "make".

If this is too complex for you to bother with, please let me know, and I
will make a minimal version.

I very much appreciate your offer of help - thanks.

Can I see a minimal program that exhibits the problem? By only looking

The header files in one of these programs are as follows:

#include
#include
#include
#include
#include
#include
#include
#include
#include

I added the last two after your suggestion; they don't make any
difference. I don't have any clue why this long-standing program, which
was developed on Solaris and ported to Linux and FreeBSD, has suddenly
started to give me problems. The Imakefile is as follows, and gives no
clue about what might be missing.

SYS_LIBRARIES= -lXmu -lXaw -lXt -lX11 -lm -lXi
SRCS = lst.c
OBJS = lst.o

ComplexProgramTarget (lst)

AFAIK, the best option is to fix the broken programs. Depending on what
it is exactly that these programs needed to pull in from ansi.h you can
use one or more of:

#include
#include
#include

To give a more definitive reply, we'd have to look at the source or at
least at the error messages you get by removing (or simply commenting
out) the inclusion of the ansi.h header.

Xmkmf/make problem

2004-10-18 Thread Mike Jeays
I have several Xlib programs that compiled successfully on earlier
versions of FreeBSD (4.1 and before), using xmkmf and make. With 5.1, I
get an error message:

"make: don't know how to make /usr/include/machine/ansi.h. Stop"

It looks as though this header file, and several others, have been moved
to other directories.

Is there a simple fix to a configuration file somewhere, or is the
problem fixed in 5.3-BETA?

Any chance this is happening over an NFS mounted directory? Sounds like
you may need to sync the NFS server and clients times...what's the exact
condition causing this, and the specific error message?
