I have the most recent version of my bios but this Ultrabooks don't really have many options :) I tried the xbrightness port, but no luck however I don't really understand the error: xbrightness 1.0 xbrightness: unable to open default display. Same here for a Dell, an IBM and a Lenovo laptop: The brightness keys are hard-wired and act without OS interaction, whereas the multimedia keys are normal keys (check with xev program) and can be programmed to do anything (like issuing mixer commands). Sometimes you can adjust brightness in BIOS setup.
