You need to shorten your From: line, man! If those directory formatting things are really in the file, and you don't have any files with hyphens in their name: # cat log.FILES.ninja | tr -d '+| -' | cpio -p /backup If the directory formatting things aren't in the file: # cat log.FILES.ninja | cpio -p /backup Easy.
