They constantly continue to open new data so the driver is improving pretty fast. I think what you are seeing is the xorg screen. Is the driver up to date? I have posted several times on this list regarding this issue. I have had the same problem with my nVidia card (when I don't have the driver installed). Did you install the driver from ports, pkg_add?
