That is it - the sound driver.
The way to get the driver in to the kernel is to add
devicepcm
in to a kernel config file in/usr/src/sys/i386/conf
eg copy GENERIC to something and edit it
and follow the handbook

Your best bet is to follow LukeK's advice and add the following line to your
kernel config file, recompile your kernel, and restart:
device pcm

I have a SoundBlaster Live! card in one of my FreeBSD (5.2.1) machines.
I have the following in /boot/loader.conf:
snd_emu10k1_load=YES
And that's it. It automatically loads the (required) snd_pcm.ko module as
I believe the soundblasters in dell machines are special in some kind, I
have a dell as well and the SB Live that came with it works fine under
windows, but does not work at all under FreeBSD, however I had an old
Live (exact same spec as the one that came with the machine) and it
works just fine,

I currently have both the dell soundblaster and a boxed soundblaster in
the machine so you should see both.
