All scripts in this (and other directories called rc.d) will be 
executed during system start, if their name ends on .sh .

 # mv gdm.sh.sample gdm.sh

Another alternative to this would be to edit /etc/ttys with a line like this:

ttyv8 /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon   xterm off secure

Except that you'll need to set the path (xdm's path) to gdm's path.
