x11-wm/wmconfig is another possibility.

Super!  thanks for the pointer to the utility.  I am assuming
there is no way short of hacking , right? or not?

Try using deskutils/alacarte, from pkg-descr:

Alacarte is a simple freedesktop.org compliant menu editor
for GNOME that lets you change your menus, simply and
quickly. Just click and type to edit, add, and delete any
menu entry.
