"supposed to" is the key phrase. I've seen similar issues before; sometimes, rearranging the order that PHP modules get loaded helps. Otherwise, try deleting and re-building PHP and the extensions and all dependencies you need. This is something that the lang/php* & corresponding php*-extensions ports handle well...
