and checked /var/tmp/root/var/named/etc/namedb.

I got the answer from a friend. This went away sometime ago. The handbook and the system I was copying from confused me.

cvs log on make-localhost shows:

revision 1.8
date: 2007/06/18 05:58:23;  author: dougb;  state: dead;  lines: +1 -1
Bring our default named configuration more in line with current
best practices:
