Smooth sailing the second time I tried the portupgrade. Could very well
be a hardware issue.

ld crashed. If it is not reproducible, you likely have a hardware issue like
overheating.

If it is reproducible, include the full command (you've truncated too much
output) and retry running ld under gdb to see why it is crashing.

freebsd 6.4 -> 7.3 upgrade failure, ports openssl, and libz.so.3 versus libz.so.4

2010-09-14 Thread Benno Overeinder
Hi,

I am upgrading a system from freebsd 6.4 to freebsd 7.3 from source. On
this system, the ports openssl package has been installed.

With the make buildworld, the compilation of sendmail fails with the
message:
/usr/obj/usr/src/tmp/usr/bin/ld: warning: libz.so.3, needed by
/usr/local/lib/libssl.so, not found (try using -rpath or -rpath-link)

Problem is that the new kernel is expecting (or compiling the sources
against) libz.so.4 (/usr/obj/usr/src/lib/libz/libz.so.4). libz.so.3 is
available in /lib/libz.so.3 (FreeBSD 6.4).

Is there any way to break this dependency, such that the make buildworld
completes successfully? It is openssl from ports depending on libz.so.3
of FreeBSD 6.4, sendmail is compiled with openssl from ports for FreeBSD
7.3, which provides libz.so.4...  The upgrade path 6.4 -> 7.3 with ports
openssl is probably not unique, others will have a similar upgrade path.

Can I specify something (/etc/make.conf?) such that 'make buildworld'
makes use of base openssl and not ports openssl? Or should I uninstall
ports openssl (and recompile half of my ports, and later again recompile
all for freebsd 7.3)?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,

While you don't say anything explicitly incorrect, I think it is trickier than
that: the "From:" address is listed as freebsd-questions@freebsd.org; is is the
"Reply-To:" address that is supp...@mpcustomer.com.

I was also reluctant to report the message as spam since the bulk of it was my
own message! I don't want replies to my messages being hit by the spam filter.
IMO, the message body is being used as unique "filler text" to get past
Bayesian filters.

I don't claim to know if the effect is intentional or accidental.

The problem is they mangle their headers to say that is comes from the
freebsd-questions mailing list. The real information is elsewhere,
but that requires some extra looking to find it. They don't seem to
realize that nobody can solve the problem without their help, and they
don't seem at all interested in working on it.

Check the message headers: the bogus replies to you come direct from
mpcustomer.com and don't go anywhere FreeBSD mailman.

Blacklisting supp...@mpcustomer.com would be an effective fix, if you
have that much control over your mail system.

No -- that's the on-going saga of the Idiot and the Clueless Support
crew. Every time anyone posts to freebsd-questi...@... they get an
auto-response from mpcustomer.com. Partly its due to some Idiot who
thought it would be fun to redirect the mailing list traffic into a
support system, but mostly it's because that Support system is badly
designed, not standards compliant (apart from anything else, you should
never send auto-replies to a Precedence: List message) and worst of all:
it sends out replies *forging the sender address*.

postmas...@freebsd.org knows of the problem, but can't do anything
unless the address that is feeding the traffic into their system can be
identified. mpcustomer.com seem incapable of doing anything to fix the
problem.

Matthew

on 7.1-stable i386 I updated to cups-base-1.3.10_1 with no problems.

Try re-installing cups-client and then upgrading cups-base.
I see the same issue when using portmaster, after you re-install the
dependency it usually builds/installs fine.

Generally, when I've come across this type of error it is a result of faulty
hardware. I would suggest running a program like memtest86 or
benchmark software that would stress your system somewhat. I'd wager
that your system is less than stable when put under any sort of load
(as occurrs when compiling a kernel).
