ie :

You have been directed to the man page for ifconfig several
times now. Probably it is about time to look it over.
Also, try setting your system clock correctly.

What do you mean by shutting it down? Not sure, but may it be
# ifconfig down /dev/whatever

As root:
#ifconfig xl1 down
where "xl1" is the name/number of the interface.
