It seems it is yet another mysterious and notorious "memory mapped IO hangs after PAT change" case of Apple hardware. If that's the case, FreeBSD 7.3 or older should work, I think. Then, you can upgrade it from source *after* adding your Mac model in sys/amd64/amd64/pmap.c such as this: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/sys/amd64/amd64/pmap.c.diff?r1=1.710;r2=1.711 If it works, please let us know.
