powerd runs. However, then I don't have any network connection to it.

With acpi disabled, powerd refuses to run.

are already in the install menu.
And, if you are, you can press scroll lock when the install menu comes
up, and then you can use page up / page down to scroll through the
console messages (you can probably use the arrow keys as well).

and (not surprisingly, really) it still needs

in /boot/loader.conf
(see earlier thread amd64 and FreeBSD 5.4-BETA1 on this mailinglist)
Other than that, I have not noticed any changes. dmesg.boot attached.

that it only works with that specific kind of srver as well.
I have seen a couple of generic lights out mgmt cards as well (I think
they use pci slots), but they are not very common.
As you said, making ssh'able terminal servers is both easy and cost
effective.
