Could you try 8-stable?
I've always used binary updates on this machine. What about 8.2?
Also it might be worth trying an XHCI (USB 3.0) host controller device.
I'm not exactly sure how I would do this. Do you mean to insert a usb 3 hub between the UPS and the host machine?
