I am now at 11.0-RELEASE-p2, and the behavior seems to be o.k. now.

Even Fabian's workaround does not guarantee success. Sometimes it helps to also
reset the controller itself "usbconfig -d ugen1.1 reset".
The controller exposes two physical ports.
