Why do you think sysutils/uefi-edk2-bhyve-csm would have a runtime (!)
dependency on gcc48 ?

Thanks to all who responded. For the record, the solution was to add
this:
disk0_type="virtio-blk"
to my /vmm/fbsd1/fbsd1.conf file.
I also added that to my /vmm/.templates/freebsd-zvol.conf.
