Just to update this for the record: my problem appears to have been 
a false alarm. 

Under heavy load yesterday, the same thing happened under 9-STABLE
as I reported under 10-STABLE. My suspicion now is that the power
supply is failing (or something similar) and it was just my testing
under 10-STABLE that was pushing it too hard.
