I run FreeBSD 7.2, 7.3 and 8.0 in HVM mode and it runs very good. Although I had some issues with certain versions of Xen. I've had a decent amount of success running the XENHVM kernel, but in a 4.x Xen environment. If it can be made to work on EC2 though, then that would be worth the attention. If the XENHVM kernel won't run well on EC2 though, I've run FreeBSD in HVM mode with the GENERIC kernel through many FreeBSD and Xen versions in various combinations and always found it stable. Not from the same kernel. If you guys want to roll HVM, then RELENG_8 (ie, 8-STABLE) should be better. PVM support in 8 and -head needs a lot of attention; but various reports indicate HVM will run fine. Let me know what you'd like and I'll see what I can upload.
