Tried on Windows now; ran several games with size=80 and generated maps
successfully in all cases (although I did run into bug #18532).
That said, I realise I haven't tried with your .freeciv-client-rc-2.4 that
you've posted to other tickets

I was about to ask if original reporter has some setting causing server to
send all map information in the beginning, causing bug #18532. That could be
global observer or reveal-map-in-start option.
