 Hi,

  I made a patch for soviet.nation.
Two last leaders added (Chernenko Gorbachev).
Also Kollontai was added, soviet diplomat
and social feminist (as there are so few females).

 Thanks, Daniil.

Thanks for the patch! More influential females are always welcome. I'd
avoid adding Gorbachev though, since he is alive. See doc/README.nations
for details about Freeciv nation policy.

M.S. Gorbachov is currently living person.
Chernenko was, well, not so good _leader_.

That is why they were not in list.

Hi,

what is the actual reason that PNG flags and shields do not depend on SVG files
and, thus, are not generated during build? Should I make a patch?

I think that leaders who are still alive, but definitely out of

avoid too hot political discussions about their importance. There is no
need to extend this on still living ex-leaders IMHO.

Yes, out of business it too non-formalistic definition.
To my mind, Gorbachev still acts in social and political life of Russia
(For example, his recent letter to Gates)

And, FWIW, I think Gorbachev earns a mention in the ruleset.

A mention - yes. Place in leader list - not now. This is my private
 opinion, of course.

PS [2Daniel? and others]: Maybe it would be nice to have more long
nation legends, that will be accessible through in-game help?

Situation is even worse with Belarusians comparing to Kazakhs.
Masherov actually was the first secretary of Communist Party

no other alternatives. Tadeusz Kościuszko was a Polish,

a good spot! The civil war rule actually sucks :)
It would be much better, if nation will have possibility to

 USSR, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Serbia Montenegro.
Okay, I will fix the ruleset.

 Some comments:

N.Korean leaders should IMHO be limited to father and son Kim.

S.Korean cities should be in contemporary orthography; e.g. Seoul and
Incheon instead of Soul and Inchon with diacritics.

'Old' Korean nation's capital should be Hanyang instead of Seoul. More
archaic forms of names should be used overall.

 More to come. =)

Hi,

I made a hack for city ordering.
In case you have list of cities without information on
their size and date of foundation it is possible to use
the Google to check importance of cities.
The script sends following queries to the Google:
 http://www.google.fi/search?q=%22city%20name%22%20%22state%20name%22
 (Hope, the Google won't know...).
Of course, results are not 100% relevant, but it is better than nothing.

On 03/03/07, Daniel Markstedt [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

There's a problem with 'extended' Latin (non-ASCII) letters in leader
names; namely that most players can't type them, which is important
when using for example the /take command! Especially grave are the
cases where the first letter of a name is 'extended' as in Icelandic
Ásgeir Ásgeirsson or Azeri Əbülfəz Elçibəy.

I don't know how to deal with this smoothly. Maybe the best way is to
allow only ASCII in leader names. But that would upset users of
languages that look odd without diacritics, for example my own native
 Swedish.

Cities are less of a problem, since you only ever (AFAIK) interact
with them through lists and the like.

  ~Daniel

In LInux it is easy to copy the names with the mouse (there is no such feature
in Windows, AFAIK) from the chat or server console.

There is no need in regenerating PNGs every build. GNU/Make checks
dependencies and perform actions only if produced PNG is older than
SVG. So that you will need this only during initial build and until you
do make clean. But okay, now I have the opinions and the best solution
is to keep the PNG in svn and just add a rule to produce lacking or
outdated PNGs.

Not so silly. Lenin had such title after his death almost until 1991.

In Fedora Core a package build happens without root privileges.
That is why attempt to install module during build fails. Moreover
it is wrong to modify files, which belong to other packages before
actual install. (As you produce only package without actually installing
anything). This modification is done during package installation with
%post script. Fedora packagers will need to block this behavior and
also will need dsc file for running %post during package install.

 Thanks, evyscr

It fails :) Well, this is the exact behavior before, when you add SVG, patch
half of dozen of files and try to build, make says to you there is no rule
to produce PNG files. In absence of Inkscape make will fail trying to execute
convert_png. However, if we will keep adding PNG to SVN this rule will never
be used during 'make' or 'make dist'. I feel update-po is very
different from this
use-case.

Have you talked to Roman about it? He did some work on uk.po a year or so ago.

  ~Daniel

Nope, І haven't. Ukrainian is one of two my native languages (the
other one is Russian).
I think Roman is from the western part of Ukraine, because of some
words he uses.
The most notable is a translation 'embassy' as English-borrowed 'ambasada'.
Officially it is translated as 'posol'stvo', which is Russian-borrowed.
You can check it from a website of any Ukrainian embassy
http://www.ukrainaemb.se/
I think Roman can correct my mistakes later if he will have such desire.
The translation 'Your diplomat failed' as 'Твій дипломат жінка' (Your
diplomat is woman)
was the best. :)

I think the flag you spotted is the Inca Empire 'Wiphala' and also the
modern flag of the Peruvian city of Cuzco. The 'gay pride' flag has
one less stripe and overall brighter colors, IIRC.

 ~Daniel

So, there is no way to add queer nation?

  There are always ways! ;)

However, if you want to use the rainbow flag, this nation will have to
be set to 'conflict' with the Inca nation, since having two nations
with near-identical flags in a game is potentially confusing.

   ~Daniel

So, I sat down and made a simple Queer/GLBT nation as a proof-of-concept.

Leaders are people somehow related to the gay rights movement, picked
while reading the relevant Wikipedia article.

Cities are a few 'queer' sexual orientations/identities. Has to be
expanded. If someone has a better idea, another kind of city list could
 be used instead.

Oh, and the 'legend' is meant as a joke and a placeholder until someone
who is well versed in GLBT history can put together something more
 educational.

The flag is from Wikimedia Commons.

 Enjoy! :)
