Follow-up Comment #2, bug #14279 (project freeciv):

Yes, server built properly with auth support works.

So the bug could be in that when auth version cannot be built:
1) configure does not error out
2) configure claims that auth support will be built

Could you check if your config.h defines HAVE_AUTH macro? (grep HAVE_AUTH
config.h)
Have you successfully built auth enabled servers before?

Details:

configuring 2_2 from svn to include user auth results in server that does not
recognise -a, --auth, and -N options even though configure seems to think it
had correctly configured it in.
