Can do nothing about it, appearance of that progress bar is controlled by qt
and windows, it looks ok for win7 ( I guess that ugly one is for XP, hehe - it
looks exactly the same like windows theme on linux).

This is most likely a problem with Qt and/or the widget style used, and has
nothing to do with the Freeciv code.

Details:

 Current unit production causes eye strain when the status bar is behind the
text due to the contrasting background. The text should probably get a
combination of larger/bolded and maybe an outline.
