Follow-up Comment #2, bug #15559 (project freeciv): Thank you for this reponse! Initially reported as a debian bug since I (rightfully, it seems) thought it was a debian issue. Confirming that the following commandline fixes the condition freeciv had and lets the client connect to its server:
