Yep. That's it. Correct for the (K)Ubuntu Version and the env var fixes ist.

Is this on Ubuntu Oneiric, by any chance?

What happens if you set GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1?

If that helps, then this is probably another report of bug #18243.

Details:

I've compiled and installed the current source, getting the gtk client.
Start of the client seems normal, but when I start the game itself, the map is
black.

In the console I have a lot of these:

(freeciv-gtk2:21791): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in
module_path: "pixmap",
