Follow-up Comment #2, bug #20486 (project freeciv):

See bug #19943. The change was intentionally made that way, but if someone is
willing to implement backward compatibility measures like ones mentioned in
that ticket, we can have them.

Trunk client connections are not correctly handled by older server neither.

See also bug #16003 for former similar problems.

Details:

When I was working on fixing the dio_get_xxx() stuff, I noticed a very
important change at r20420, patch #2789.

I think it hasn't done properly.

Testing with an old client connecting a patched server, the server doesn't
read the first letter of the username, and doesn't send an appropriate packet
to the client.

I am quite scared of other issues, notably with pings...
