Sounds like a cool idea!

Let's just make sure that players who are used to the current way 2.1  
works in multiplayer aren't left out in the dark. I.e. to make the  
defaults as similar as possible to current 2.1. I see you're already  
working in this direction in f.e. #40678. :)

On the whole, the idea gets my support.
