[Freedombox-discuss] Freedombox Connect to Router

2017-11-29 Thread Josh Blagden
Hi guys,

I just joined the mailing list. I'm interested in setting up a
Freedombox, but I'm afraid that its range may be insufficient and I also
prefer wired Internet connections better than wireless. Is it possible
to connect a Freedombox to router so you can get better range and
connectivity than what you could get with either an SBC's internal
wireless card or an external USB one? If it is, is it possible to do
that in a way in which you can still have gigabit speeds when using a
wired connection?

[Freedombox-discuss] SMB File Share

2017-11-30 Thread Josh Blagden
Is it possible to use a Freedombox as a file share? For example, for
hosting movies and TV shows for in-house streaming?

[Freedombox-discuss] Cubieboard5 Deemed Unsuitable?

2017-12-01 Thread Josh Blagden
I was on https://wiki.debian.org/CheapServerBoxHardware and I noticed
that the Cubieboard3 was recomended, but the Cubieboard5 wasn't. Why is
this? Why was the Cubieboard5 deemed " possibly using less than ideal
components or wiring for essential parts" while the Cubieboard3 was not?

[Freedombox-discuss] LInksys WRT 1200AC

2017-12-04 Thread Josh Blagden
Hi guys,

Has anybody here turned a Linksys WRT 1200AC into a Freedombox? I'm
curious because I think it would be the ideal way to set one up,
especially for proxies and stuff like that where the network topology
would require that the Freedombox being in the "direct chain of command"
instead of being off to the side. I figure that for that kind of thing,
the best thing would be to use a router. In fact, I've heard of setups
where a Freedombox fashioned from a Raspbery Pi or OLinuXino Lime2 or
CubieTruck uses Ethernet for the WAN connection and then makes its own
Wi-Fi hotspot with an external USB wireless card. I think Privoxy could
be useful, but if I were to use it, I'd like it to be running on the router.

Thanks,

[Freedombox-discuss] Banana Pi BPI-R2

2018-02-13 Thread Josh Blagden
Hi folks,

I was going through the Debian Micronews RSS feed and I stumbled upon
the 2017 Freedombox progress report. While I was reading through it, I
noticed that the Banana Pro board was mentioned. So, I did some research
on Banana Pi and I came came across a neat board that I think would make
a great Freedombox. Considering that one of the goals of Freedombox is
to serve as a router, I think the Banana Pi BPI-R2 would be a great
board for it because in addition to having 2 SATA ports and two USB 3.0
ports, it also has 5 ethernet ports (including WAN).

Here's a link to it in case you'd like to check it out:
